Wenn man auf Thrash der neueren deutschen Thrashbands steht, kommt man zwangsläufig an REZET nicht vorbei. Die Mannen um Richard “Ricky” Wagner stehen für frischen kompromisslosen Thrash in all seinen Facetten und Einflüssen. Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Albums, das schlicht “REZET” heißt und am 30.08.2024 erscheint, ergab sich die Gelegenheit ein paar Worte mit Basser Lorenz Kandolf zu wechseln.
HF: Hi Lorenz! Danke das Du dir die Zeit genommen hast. Euer neuer Longplayer heißt schlicht “REZET”. Was steckt hinter dieser Auswahl und dem doch eher “schlichten” Cover?
LK: Hi Stefan, danke für euer Interesse! Wir hatten uns lange über einen Albumtitel unterhalten, das ging wirklich viel hin und her – wollen wir einen Songtitel für das Album nehmen? Oder komplett unabhängig von den eigenen Songtitel etwas ganz anderes nehmen?! Schlussendlich haben wir uns dafür entschieden einfach ein “self-titled Album” zu veröffentlichen, etwas was Rezet ja selber noch nicht gemacht hatte. Dennoch finde ich, dass das sehr passend ist und auch gut zum aktuellen Output steht.
Das Cover wurde von Pär Olofsson gemalt und wirklich schlicht ist es eigentlich nicht. Da sind verdammt viele kleine Details drin, die es dort zu entdecken gibt. Das ganze Konzept spielt quasi auf einen Neuanfang, also Reset an. Die Natur nimmt sich das zurück was ihr genommen worden ist. Wenn Du dir beispielsweise die Vinylversion nimmst, die ja auch als hübsches Gatefold veröffentlicht wird, dann wirst du sehen wie die zwei Artworks zusammengehören und das ganze Bild eine Geschichte erzählt. Wir haben lange mit Pär an dem Konzept gefeilt, da gingen auch einige Versionen hin und her, bis wir alle tatsächlich zufrieden damit waren. Des Weiteren wollten wir nicht das hundertste “Klischee Metal Cover”, mit Monstern, Splatter und was weiß ich haben. Daher eher das “schlichte” Artwork, wie Du sagst.
HF: Ansonsten ist das Album wieder sehr abwechslungsreich und es werden sogar Chöre verwendet. Gibt es dazu eine Geschichte?
LK: Die Chöre haben einfach toll gepasst! Warum also nicht? Und wie du bereits ja richtig erwähnt hast, ist das Album wirklich abwechslungsreich. Wir haben wirklich viel an den einzelnen Songs gearbeitet, und jeder hat beim Songwriting eigene Ideen eingebracht. Daher gibt es auch viele neue Sachen, auch das Klavierintro zum Beispiel!
HF: Bei einem Song arbeitet ihr sogar mit ANVIL Legende Steve “LIPS” Kudlow zusammen. Wie kam es denn zu dieser Zusammenarbeit?
LK: 2016 waren Rezet mit Anvil auf Tour und wir haben uns super verstanden, also wirklich richtig richtig gut! Dadurch ist sogar eine Art Freundschaft entstanden. Vor allem Ricky ist auch fortlaufend noch immer im Austausch mit Lips, die zwei Texten auch regelmäßig miteinander. Daher war das eigentlich ganz easy und Ricky hatte einfach angefragt ob er Lust dazu hätte. Lips fand den Song cool und hat dann auch seine Soli beigesteuert, was natürlich eine große Ehre für uns ist!
HF: Wie bereits erwähnt stellt man beim durchhören des Albums fest, dass es sehr abwechslungsreich ist. War euch es wichtig, nicht wie die nächsten Slayer oder Testament zu klingen? Oder was war bzw. ist euch wichtig?
LK: Generell will glaube ich keine Band wie 185igste Slayer/Testament Coverband klingen – auf jeden Fall haben wir da nie darauf abgezielt! Aber wie bereits oben erwähnt haben alle beim Komponieren ihren Teil dazu beigetragen und da merkt man natürlich die verschiedenen Stile und Ideen, die natürlich die Abwechslung auf die Platte bringen. Ich finde ja, dass das Album wie Rezet klingt. Rezet war schon immer eine sehr verspielte Band und nicht einfach nur 120% Speed, E-Saiten rumgerühre und Breakdowns, oder so etwas. Die Platte kling nach Rezet – Melodien, catchy Refrains, nicht nur hasserfülltes Geschrei, sondern auch wirklich Lieder mit Gesang und durchdachten Texten. Das wollten wir und das haben wir auch so umgesetzt.
HF: Wie seht ihr die allgemeine Situation im Metal, in Bezug auf schleppende Vorverkäufe und teilweise sogar abgesagten Touren und Konzerten? Gerade die kleineren Clubs haben da ja immer mehr drunter zu leiden…
LK: Die allgemeine Situation im Metal würde ich als durchaus positiv beschreiben. Es kommen super viele neue Alben und Bands auf den Markt, die alten Hasen veröffentlichen super Alben und generell ist auf jeden Fall Interesse an dieser Musik und in all ihren verschiedenen Facetten vorhanden. Die Live-Situation hat sich natürlich durch die Pandemie, die enorm gestiegenen Kosten und die dadurch entstehenden Einbußen stark verändert, das aber auch auf beiden Seiten. Also sowohl die Clubs, Veranstalter und Bands, haben viel höhere Kosten, als wie vor der Pandemie oder dem russischen Angriffskrieg. Dennoch bin ich der Meinung, dass so große Touren von 6-8 Wochen langfristig nicht mehr der Fall bzw. der Standard sind. Hier sind die Kosten einfach zu hoch und auch nicht wirklich abschätzbar, ob man da sich nicht finanziell selber in den Ruin manövriert. Hier gibt es ja auch viele Beispiele von den ganz großen Bands wie Anthrax, Testament und Co. Aber allgemein merkt man schon, dass das Kultur- und Clubsterben voranschreitet. Wo sind denn die kleinen JuHa Konzerte hin, die man damals für 5€ besucht hat und dort dann 3-4 Bands gespielt haben? So etwas ist auf jeden Fall weniger geworden! Möglicherweise ist die Nachfrage nicht mehr da, oder halt die wirklich hohen Kosten. Ich finde das alles sehr schade, aber vielleicht kommt mir das auch nur so vor. Gefühlt war hier früher mehr los, aber ich kann mich da auch täuschen.
HF: Wie geht es mit euch in Zukunft weiter? Ihr habt ja schon mit Größen wie Overkill und Destruction getourt. Wird es eine Albumtour geben oder mit Bands ähnlichen Kalibers?
LK: Wir machen einfach kontinuierlich weiter! Es stehen noch einige Gigs für 2024 an. Des Weiteren sind wir natürlich auch in Planung für 2025 und können uns gut eine größere Tour vorstellen. Aber wie bereits oben beschrieben, muss das alles Hand und Fuß haben, sinnig geplant und natürlich auch der Kostenfaktor berücksichtigt werden. Aber keine Sorge, ihr werdet uns nicht los und 2025 werden wir jede Menge unterwegs sein!

If you like thrash from the newer German thrash bands, you can’t avoid REZET. The men around Richard “Ricky” Wagner stand for fresh, uncompromising thrash in all its facets and influences. In the course of the release of their new album, which is simply called “REZET” and will be released on 08-30-2024, we have the opportunity to exchange a few words with bassist Lorenz Kandolf.
HF: Hi Lorenz! Thank you for taking the time. Your new longplayer is simply called “REZET”. What’s behind this choice and the rather “simple” cover?
LK: Hi Stefan, thanks for your interest! We had been talking about an album title for a long time, that really went back and forth – do we want to use a song title for the album? Or choose completely independent from our own song title something completely different? In the end we decided to just release a “self-titled album”, something REZET hadn’t done before. Nevertheless, I think it’s very fitting and also fits well with the current output. The cover was painted by Pär Olofsson and it’s not really simple. There are a hell of a lot of little details. Details that can be discovered. The whole concept alludes to a new beginning, a reset. Nature takes back what has been taken from it. If you take the vinyl version, for example, which is also released as a pretty gatefold, then you will see how the two artworks belong together and how the whole picture tells a story. We worked on the concept with Pär for a long time, a few versions went back and forth until we were all really happy with it. Furthermore, we didn’t want the hundredth “cliché metal cover” with monsters, splatter and so on. Therefore a “simple” artwork, as you say.
HF: Apart from that, the album is again very varied and you even uses choirs. Is there a story behind it?
LK: The choirs fit very well! So why not? And as you’ve already mentioned, the album is really varied. We really worked a lot on the individual songs and everyone contributed their own ideas to the songwriting. That’s why there are a lot of new things, including the piano intro, for example!
HF: On one song you even work together with ANVIL legend Steve “LIPS” Kudlow. How did this collaboration come about?
LK: In 2016 REZET were on tour with Anvil and we got on really well, really really well! As a result even created a kind of friendship. Ricky in particular is still in constant contact with Lips, the two of them also text each other regularly. So it was actually really easy and Ricky simply asked if he would like to do it. “LIPS” thought the song was cool and then contributed his solos, which is of course a great honor for us!
HF: As already mentioned, when you listen to the album you realize that it is very varied. Was it important for you not to sound like the next Slayer or Testament? Or what was important to you?
LK: In general, I don’t think any band wants to sound like the 185th Slayer/Testament cover band – in any case, we never aimed for that! But as already mentioned above, everyone has contributed to the compositions and of course you can hear the different styles and ideas that bring variety to the record. I think the album sounds like REZET. REZET has always been a very playful band and not just 120% speed, electric strings and breakdowns, or something like that. The record sounds like REZET – melodies, catchy choruses, not just hateful screaming, but actual songs with vocals and thoughtful lyrics. That that’s what we wanted and that’s what we did.
HF: How do you see the general situation in metal, in terms of sluggish pre-sales and sometimes even canceled tours and concerts? Especially the smaller clubs have to suffer more and more from this…
LK: I would describe the general situation in metal as quite positive. There are a lot of new albums and Bands coming onto the market, the old hands are releasing great albums and there is definitely a general interest in this music and all its different facets. The live situation has of course changed due to the pandemic, the enormous increase in costs and the resulting losses, but that has also changed a lot on both sides. So both the clubs, organizers and bands have much higher costs than before the pandemic or the Russian war of aggression. Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that such large tours of 6-8 weeks are no longer the case or the standard. The costs here are simply too high and it’s not really possible to estimate whether you are not maneuvering yourself into financial ruin. There are also many examples of the really big bands bands like Anthrax, Testament and co. But in general you can already see that the death of culture and clubs is progressing. Where are the small Youthclub concerts that you used to go to for €5 and then 3-4 bands played there? That kind of thing has definitely become less common! Maybe the demand is no longer there or just the really high costs. I think it’s all a shame, but maybe it just seems that way to me. It feels like there used to be more going on here, but I could be wrong.
HF: What’s next for you in the future? You’ve already toured with big names like Overkill and Destruction. Will there be an album tour or with bands of a similar caliber?
LK: We just keep going! We still have a few gigs lined up for 2024. Furthermore, we are of course also planning for 2025 and can well imagine a bigger tour. But as already described above all of this has to have a solid foundation, be planned sensibly and of course the cost factor has to be taken into account. But don’t worry, you won’t get rid of us and we’ll be on the road a lot in 2025!
