Eine weitere Band die einem zwangsläufig beim Hören von Teutonic Thrash Metal über den Weg läuft, sind die Mannen von ERADICATOR. Gerade machen sie die Festivalbühnen der Republik unsicher und zerlegen so ziemlich jede Bühne, die sich ihnen bietet. Ich hatte das Vergnügen sie beim No Playback Festival persönlich in Augenschein nehmen zu können. Sie haben einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen. Nun warten sie mit ihrem neuestem Longplayer “THE PARADOX” auf. Ein weiterer tritt in jeden Metal-Hintern. Deshalb haben wir uns mit Sänger/Gitarrist Sebastian Stöber unterhalten:
HM: Hallo Seba! Danke für deine Zeit. Euer neuer Longplayer “THE PARADOX” wütet gerade durch die Lande und macht soundtechnisch einen weiteren Schritt nach vorne. Was war euch bei der Entstehung wichtig und was war die wichtigste Neuerung, die ihr vorgenommen habt?
Seba: Hey Stefan, danke für deine Einordnung. Wir haben uns vorgenommen, zu unserem zwanzigsten Bandjubiläum das beste Album herauszubringen, das wir imstande sind, zu schreiben. Das klingt ja eigentlich ganz einfach, haha. Das haben wir uns früher auch immer so ähnlich vorgenommen, aber nie so explizit bandintern darüber gesprochen. Wichtig ist bei so einem Plan, dass man es nicht erzwingt. Zumindest funktioniert das bei uns so nicht. Wir haben nach der “Influence Denied” einfach kontinuierlich weiter an neuen Songs gearbeitet. Und so ist “The Paradox” die Essenz von dem, was wir in den letzten Jahren komponiert haben. Man kann natürlich nach wie vor Thrash Metal erwarten! Wir gehen aber beim Komponieren ohne Scheuklappen an die Sache. Entscheidend ist, dass wir auch andere persönliche Einflüsse zulassen und uns nicht kopieren. Eine Weiterentwicklung ist für uns entscheidend. Sonst wird es als Musiker ja auch langweilig.
HM: Was genau soll das Cover des Albums darstellen bzw. was sieht man dort genau?
Seba: Die Illustration zeigt eine Chimäre, ein Fabelwesen, das aus den Körperteilen verschiedener Arten besteht. Es soll die Paradoxie darstellen, die nicht nur im Titel, sondern auch in den textlich behandelten Themen steckt. Die Idee, dass die Szene eine Küstenregion darstellt, ist inspiriert vom Opener “Beyond the Shadow´s Void”. Es soll “lovecraftig” anmuten; spitze Felsen und das Meer spiegeln die Mythologie rund um Innsmouth und den Cthulhu-Mythos wider.
HM: Wie gehst Du bei der Textfindung vor? Sind es bestimmte Themen oder alltägliche Erlebnisse, die Du suchst und aufgreifst?
Seba: In der Regel ist es nicht so, dass ich aktiv nach Themen recherchiere. Wenn ich etwas Interessantes lese, höre oder sonst wie aufschnappe, dann mache ich mir schnell Notizen – und wenn es so weit ist, krame ich diese hervor und schaue wie sich meine Aufzeichnungen für einen Songtext eignen. Zum Titeltrack hat mich eine Dokumentation über industrielle Tiermast und Schlachtung inspiriert. Auch wenn mir vieles davon schon bewusst war, haben mich die Bilder
und die Informationen doch sehr berührt und ich musste etwas dazu schreiben. Dahabe ich gleich am nächsten Tag fast den kompletten Text geschrieben.
HM: Ihr seid ja momentan auf ziemlich jeder Bühne, die sich Euch bietet unterwegs und scheint relativ gut gebucht zu sein. Wie seht ihr die momentane Entwicklung in Sachen schlechten Vorverkäufen bis hin zu abgesagten Konzerten und ganzen Tourneen?
Seba: Bis auf wirklich wenige Ausnahmen waren unsere Konzerte seit der Öffnung nach Corona richtig gut besucht. Es hätte kaum besser laufen können. “Influence Denied” ist zwar im Peak der Pandemie erschienen, hat uns als Band und für unsere Bekanntheit allerdings einen riesigen Push nach vorne gebracht. Da sind wir sehr stolz drauf. Live zu spielen, ist für uns das, worum es sich dreht. Songs schreiben, aufnehmen und die Promotion; das alles ist viel Arbeit. Auch wenn man es gerne macht, muss man sich teilweise ziemlich ins Zeug legen und an seine Grenzen gehen. Bei Konzerten zu performen, ist die Belohnung für all die Mühen. Den Augenblick auf der Bühne zu genießen, ist das Größte für uns! Ich bin mir sicher, das sieht und hört man unseren Shows an!
HM: Plant ihr im Zuge der Veröffentlichung von “THE PARADOX” eine kleine Tour?
Seba: So ist es. Wir haben für den Rest des Jahres noch 10 Shows geplant. Mit den zurückliegenden wird das unser jährlicher Rekord sein. Das ist für unser Jubiläum ein weiterer toller Meilenstein. Wir sind aktuell bei 19 Gigs. Krass wäre natürlich, wenn wir dieses Jahr sogar die 20 voll machen könnten.
HM: Blicken wir mal etwas voraus. Was sind eure weiteren Ziele für die nähere Zukunft?
Seba: Uns ist jetzt erstmal am wichtigsten, den neuen Songs Gehör zu verschaffen! Das geht am besten durch Konzerte und Kontakt mit der Szene. Darauf freuen wir uns sehr. Im November veranstalten wir unser Jubiläumsfestival im Vortex in Siegen. Dort spielen neben uns noch Pripjat, Godslave, Steelpreacher, Fabulous Desaster und Taskforce Toxicator. Die geballte Ladung Underground. Wen das kaltlässt, dem können wir nicht mehr helfen, hahaha. Wir buchen natürlich auch schon Shows fürs nächste Jahr. Einer unserer bisher verbliebenen unerfüllten Träume ist eine internationale Tour mit einer großen Band, vielleicht vom Kaliber Death Angel oder so. Da müssen wir noch dran arbeiten!

Another band that you’re run into when listening to Teutonic Thrash Metal are the men from ERADICATOR. They burn the festival stages through the country and playing pretty much every stage they can find. I had the pleasure of seeing them in person at the No Playback Festival. They left a lasting impression. Now they’re releasing their latest Album “THE PARADOX”. Another kick in every metal butt. That’s why we talked to singer/guitarist Sebastian Stöber:
HM: Hello Seba! Thanks for your time. Your new longplayer “THE PARADOX” is currently raging through the country and takes another step forward in terms of sound. What was important to you when creating it, and what was the most important change you made?
Seba: Hey Stefan, thanks for your classification. For our twentieth anniversary as a band, we have set ourselves the goal of writing the best album we are capable of. That actually sounds quite simple, haha. That we’ve always made similar plans in the past, but never talked about it so explicitly within the band. The important thing with a plan like that is that you don’t force it. At least that’s not how it works for us. After “Influence Denied” we simply continued to work on new songs. And so “The Paradox” is the essence of what we’ve composed over the last few years. You can still expect thrash metal, of course! But we approach composing without blinkers. The decisive factor is that we also allow other personal influences and not copy ourselves. Further development is crucial for us. Otherwise, it’s getting boring as a musician.
HM: What exactly is the cover of the album supposed to represent or what exactly do you see there?
Seba: The illustration shows a chimera, a mythical creature made up of the body parts of different species. It’s intended to represent the paradox inherent not only in the title but also in the themes dealt with in the text. The idea, that the scene represents a coastal region is inspired by the opener “Beyond the Shadow’s Void”. It is supposed to have a “lovecraftian” style. The pointed rocks and the sea reflect the mythology surrounding Innsmouth and the Cthulu myth.
HM: How do you proceed your texts? Are there certain topics or everyday experiences that you look for and pick up on?
Seba: As a rule, I don’t actively research topics. If I read or hear something interesting or pick up something else, then I quickly make notes — and when the time comes, I pull them out and see how my notes lend themselves to a song lyric. The title track was inspired by a documentary about industrial animal fattening and slaughter inspired me to write the title track. Even though I was already aware of a lot of it, the images and information touched me deeply, and I had to write something about it. So the very next day I wrote almost the entire text.
HM: At the moment you’re on pretty much every stage you can find and seem to be relatively well booked. How do you see the current development in terms of bad advance sales up to canceled concerts and entire tours?
Seba: With very few exceptions, our concerts have been really well attended since the opening after Corona. It could hardly have gone better. “Influence Denied” was released at the peak of the pandemic, but it gave us a huge boost as a band and a huge push forward for us as a band and for our popularity. We’re very proud of that. Playing live, is what it’s all about for us. Writing songs, recording, and the promotion; it’s all a lot of work — even if you like doing it, you have to put in a lot of effort and push yourself to your limits. Performing at concerts is the reward for all the hard work. Enjoying the moment on stage is the greatest thing for us! I’m sure you can see and hear that in our shows!
HM: Are you planning a small tour around the release of “THE PARADOX”?
Seba: That’s right. We have 10 shows planned for the rest of the year. With the past ones that will be our annual record. This is another great milestone for our anniversary. We are currently at 19 gigs. It would be great if we could even reach 20 this year.
HM: Let’s take a look ahead. What are your other goals for the near future?
Seba: The most important thing for us now is to get the new songs heard! The best way to do that is through concerts and contact with the scene. We’re really looking forward to that. In November, we’re organizing our anniversary festival at the Vortex in Siegen. In addition to us, Pripjat, Godslave, Steelpreacher, Fabulous Desaster and Taskforce Toxicator will be playing there. The concentrated load of underground. If that leaves you cold, we can’t help you anymore, hahaha. Of course, we’re already booking shows for next year. One of our remaining unfulfilled dreams so far is an international tour with a big band, maybe Death Angel or something like that. We still have to work on that!
